Homemade Dog Foods
Many
owners are turning to homemade treats verses store-bought or processed treats and snacks. The health benefits of homemade
treats parallel our human need to snack healthier and live healthier lives, so it only makes sense that we not only want the best nutrition for ourselves, but also for petsafe of our canine companions. Sometimes the
food you buy in stores are not safe and to be on the safe side you will want to feed your
homemade
food. Should that ever be the case, all that is required is a simple mix of meat, vegetables and starches.
From 50% to 70% of the ingredients should be meat, such as beef or chicken. Be sure to take all the bones out first, as dogs can choke on bones, especially soft chicken bones. The remainder of the meal should be made up of carbohydrates and vegetables. Good carbohydrates are potatoes or rice. Do not use pasta or any other carbohydrates made from corn, wheat or soy, since they are not good for dogs.
Good vegetables to use are: carrots, peas, green beans, spinach, beans, cabbage, yams, sweet potatoes, etc. Also, ask your vet as to what vitamins and minerals should be added to your dog’s meal. The amount you should feed your
varies, and depends upon the size, breed, age and activity level of your dog. John Miller’s Book has hundreds of
food recipes based on the above building blocks, and has recommendations as to serving sizes and other things to take into account when cooking for your dog.

We usually keep him inside in the evenings until the morning when we go to work. Our house is really warm at nights and it?s really cold outside in the mornings. Today he is acting and looking sick. Bandit developed spayed female incontinence over a year ago. She has been on Proin. She takes 1.5 tablets 2X's a day but it doesn?t seem to be working. She did have an ultrasound 12 months ago which revealed nothing. It seems to happen mostly at night. When she wakes up in the morning she has a big puddle underneath her. My 5 lb toy poodle was seen at the vet yesterday and diagnosed with diabetes. One of the symptoms we came in with was that she was acting like she was constipated and hadn't pooped in two days. We gave her an insulin shot last night and again this morning and the vet gave her a new diet. This morning after she ate, she had a huge uncontrolled BM on the kitchen floor that was not the same consistency as normal, looser than normal, but not runny. I took her outside and she strained with no results. A few minutes later she had another accident inside and was dripping blood. Again she strained outside with no results. Marley a.k.a Little Bit is a male neutered 1 year old beautiful Black Labrador Retriever who was given as a gift to a family that was in no way prepared for what was about to happen.
At first Marley was tiny, cuddly, sweet, soft, and wooed his way into every ones heart with oodles of puppy breath and little kisses, but the peace and serenity was short lived. In no time at all, Marley grew into a big ball of high energy, and typical of his breed, Marley soon came to resemble an out of control Union Pacific locomotive. Kris is a large young male Labrador Retriever German Shepherd mix who wondered right through the front door of a hospital in Arkadelphia Arkansas on Christmas day looking for some Christmas Cheer.
Everywhere Kris wandered that Christmas day, he would have been able to smell Christmas dinner wafting through the air, and by now he was probably more than just a little hungry for some turkey and dressing. Winnie was picked up by Little Rock Animal Services and taken to the shelter to compete with all the other dogs and puppies for the attention of the few people willing to endure the noise and distress of the barking and crying.
Rooster is a handsome little male Border Collie Australian Shepherd mix puppy who was found along the side of the road in rural Arkansas near the community of Whitehall.
Rooster and his litter mates were taken to the local shelter, but like most rural shelters, they have little time and resource to keep any animals they rescue for very long. The future was looking bleak for little Rooster until a couple of hard working rescue volunteers heard of his plight and pulled him from the shelter.
